Funny Boys
I try to write down the funny things my boys say. Recently, I recorded two funny conversations / interactions between Brigham and Joshua:
A couple of days before Joshua’s birthday, I was putting away some laundry in the boy’s rooms when I heard Brigham tell Joshua he had a present for him. He was holding what looked like a cup, crudely covered in Christmas wrapping paper. Of course Joshua was intrigued and begged to be able to open it right then. Brigham excitedly agreed and handed him the package. Joshua opened the package. It was a plastic drinking cup. He took a look inside as Brigham exclaimed, “They’re flowers. I watered them yesterday.” Inside the cup were some wilted blossoms from our flowering pear tree. Brigham had a big grin on his face.
Joshua, on the other hand looked bewildered. “But I don’t like flowers,” he replied.
“Joshua,” I interjected reprovingly.
Joshua apologetically, gave Brigham a quick hug and said, “Thank you Brigham. Could you find any red ones? I like red ones.” He handed the cup back to Brigham and said, “Its okay you can have them.” Then, glancing at me and back at Brigham he finished, “Thanks for trying.”
I almost laughed out loud. Thankfully Brigham didn’t think much of the rejection. I thought it was so sweet of Brigham to: one, give Joshua flowers and two, to go to the effort to wrap them all by himself (with Christmas wrapping paper).
A few weeks later I was in the kitchen and Joshua and Brigham were at the table. I can’t remember what Brigham had, but Joshua wanted it. After several failed attempt, he offered, “I won’t hurt you anymore today.”
I interrupted, “Today, how about ever.”
Brigham liked that and the smart boy said, “Yea, say ever.”
Joshua thought about it for a moment and agreed, “Okay ever, but I might forget that.”
To which Brigham said, “Jesus won’t be happy if you punch me. Satan will be happy.”
Unfortunately, Joshua has forgotten his little bargain many times since then. I hate when our family "makes Satan happy." I especially hate when I do. But I think all in all, we make Jesus happy more. So, at least we're headed in the right direction.
